According to the U.S. Department of Education, parent support is more important to school success than a child’s I.Q., economic status, or school setting. Wondering what you can do to foster your child’s success in school? Keep reading:

Positive Attitude

Show enthusiasm about your child’s school to help your children get excited and eager to come to school and be successful. Any negative feelings involving school should be discussed out of earshot of the children as it can have a negative effect on their mindset. Show interest in the school and the subjects your child is studying to help spark their interest as well. Children see that their studies have value when they see that their parents are interested.

Long Term

While students are in school to learn reading, writing, and math skills, the two keys to success lie in study skills and guiding them on how to learn. Help your child develop effective study skills and time management strategies to give them the tools they really need to learn any subject.

Communication

Communicate with teachers often, whether it be through email, phone calls, notes, or face-to-face. Parents may recognize problems sooner than the teacher. It is important to approach the child’s education as a team effort and common goal between the parent and teacher. Building a relationship with your children’s teachers makes a huge difference.

Support Strengths

Parents sometimes tend to focus mostly on areas where the child needs extra help, but it is important to recognize and encourage strengths. Helping them develop their areas of interest will help to keep them motivated. Look for opportunities to expand their learning outside of the classroom.

Role Model

Show your kids that adults use reading and writing skills every day. Demonstrate how you use reading skills to read street signs and directions; write for your children by sticking a nice note in their lunchbox or writing their chores down on a whiteboard. Read with your child or spend time reading alongside each other.
