The Importance of Summer Learning

By Anna Doggett – Walton Academy’s Guidance Counselor

We made it, summer is here! Your children have had busy brains all year long, and we cannot wait to see their growth this upcoming school year!

As the end of the year approaches, we urge you to remember that summer is the perfect time for your child to discover fun and new learning opportunities that can happen anywhere. You are your child’s first teacher, and your example in this matter is crucial!

This summer can be transformed into a time to stretch the mind, explore new hobbies, learn about responsibility, and learn creatively. It is important that you encourage your child to engage in activities that will maintain and strengthen the skills learned during the school year.

So, we challenge you to make time for learning this summer! Implementing any academic reinforcements, whether they are big or small, will make a difference. Encourage your child to keep a journal, join your library’s reading program, or get those math facts down pat! Fostering these habits are essential to your child’s academic success. Best of all, your child will enter the next grade level feeling more confident, focused, and determined to take on the next challenge!
