STEAM curriculum stands for science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. Walton Academy was one of the first elementary schools in Eastern, NC to implement STEAM lessons into our curriculum. These may seem like ordinary school subjects, but together these lessons promote higher-order thinking skills through hands-on learning.

Promoting Innovation

The content in our STEAM lessons are complex, but it teaches our students to get creative with their problem-solving skills. They will learn that not every problem has one solution. They will learn through trial and error to find a solution. This encourages perseverance and mental work. Through group work, students will be able to work cohesively, learning with others and practicing communication skills.

Developing Critical Thinking Skills

STEAM lessons encourage students to think outside of the box. The complex lesson plans require students to think step-by-step and use a variety of methods to solve the problem. Critical thinking teaches students to take risks and use trial and error to find the right solution. There are all sorts of projects our students do each week. This curriculum challenges students and encourages them to think outside the box. Great examples of STEAM projects are creating a crystal, block sculptures, tie-dye or using materials like lights and magnets for projects. These are fun ways for students to get involved in arts, science, and math while developing skills that will be used for the rest of their lives.

Solution Based Learning

Students are able to learn as they go. They can pick materials up and play with them to discover what they do. Hands-on learning gives the students confidence in their ability to build and fix objects, and how it all comes together. Some may work backward to find a solution while others may go for it and work on a trial and error basis. In the end, all students will learn how to verify and interpret results that they can apply to all aspects of life.
