Going back to school after a fun-filled summer can be a big adjustment. A new grade means new people, new teachers, and new expectations. A little bit of preparation at home can go a long way when it comes to walking through those doors on the first day of school. Here’s how to make the start of the school year a smooth transition for your child.

Get Familiar with the School

If your child is returning to the same school, then you’re all set. If these are new stomping grounds, take a few trips to help familiarize your child with their new school. If the building is open, do a walk-through and peer into a classroom or two. If not, your child will still feel a bit more familiar after seeing the building up close.

Teacher/Child Bonding

Children feel much more comfortable in the classroom when they feel connected to their teacher. Take advantage of orientation opportunities that allow students and parents to meet the teachers before the beginning of the school year. Speak about the teacher in fond and familiar terms once you find out your child’s classroom assignment, such as “I bet Ms. Davis is so excited to see how good of a reader you are!”

Facilitate Bonding Between Kids

If your child is familiar with other kids in their class, they will feel more at ease. Make an effort to meet other kids in the neighborhood if you are new to town, as they may be some of your child’s classmates. You can even arrange playdates with classmates your child already knows to warm them up again before school starts.

Talk About It

Start conversations about the beginning of school with your child. Get them excited by letting them know what they can expect, such as snack time, playing on the playground, reading, learning new things, etc. Ask your child what they think this year will be like; it will help them express things they might be nervous about. Talk them through their worries and provide reassurance.

Get Back on Schedule

Sleep schedules can get out of whack in the summertime, so move bedtime to an earlier time little by little before school starts to get back in the groove. If you try to impose an early bedtime only the night before school starts, it will most likely be a struggle.
