When children are in their youngest stages of life, their curiosity is at an all-time high. Babies and toddlers love to explore, play, and learn, but that love of learning sometimes gets lost. Some children end up disliking school, therefore their love of learning fades away with it. However, it can be cultivated. Here’s how:

Discover Interests

Sometimes children have an aversion towards learning because they have not yet found something that they are truly interested in. Help your child discover their interests by having them select topics that catch their eye. Talk to them about what they like to read, watch, or do. Take a trip to the library to check out books on a variety of topics. Visit a museum, theater, zoo, or other attractions. There are many activities that can help your child find something they are interested in.

Make It Fun

Learning, no matter what the subject, can be made fun through games, creative activities, songs, and more. Creative activities such as word searches, crossword puzzles, and academic BINGO are a great way to make learning fun. If your child begins to get antsy or distracted, have them take a brain break so they can return feeling more focused. When learning is seen as fun rather than stressful, your child’s love of learning will grow.

Learning Styles

Children have their own style of learning that works best for them. The three main learning styles are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Visual learners process information best when it is displayed as writing or images. Auditory learners are good listeners and learn best by hearing information. Kinesthetic learners learn best through movement and touch. Find your child’s learning style to help them learn in a way that feels more natural.

Lead By Example

Show your child that you are passionate about learning too, whether it be by watching videos, reading books, or joining a club for something you are interested in, like a book club, cooking club, etc. Take turns sharing what you are learning, explaining the excitement and challenges of learning new things and how you have applied your newly cultivated knowledge.
